Funny Lady

In November Tina Fey will be awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American humor, the most prestigious humor prize in the country. Hells yeah! Fey, 40, is the youngest comedian to be honored and just the third woman (after Lily Tomlin and Whoopie Goldberg). Fey released a statement saying she's psyched and that Betty White must have been "disqualified for steroid use."

Fey has been a PoolBoy favorite since her days writing (first woman head writer, what what!) and performing on SNL. Plus, who doesn't love a lady who came up in Chicago's Second City improv group (yay Illinois!)? Fey's work on NBC's 30 Rock, which is probably the funniest show on TV right now, has provided our generation with a shit ton of hilarious one liners like, "I'm Lizzing!," "ROBOT PENIS," "never go with a hippie to a second location," and "didn’t you tell me to live every week like it’s Shark Week? And that nothing’s impossible except dinosaurs?" among many, many others, which can be heard constantly in homes and retail establishments across the country. She's fucking funny.

I've included one of my favorite SNL Weekend Update clips below, the notorious "Bitch is the New Black." Jump to 1:29.

Now, however you feel about Hilary Clinton, Fey's humor in this clip is witty and to the point: we had a serious female candidate for President and the media was sexist as shit while trying to discredit her. Call her a bitch? Yeah, she IS a bitch, and so are many strong women who have to speak their minds to a society rife with sexism. Clinton didn't get the nomination and Obama is now our President, but Clinton made miles and miles of new road on America's way to it's first female President, just as Tina Fey has for feminism (she dares to use the word on TV!) and women in comedy.

Congrats, Liz Lemon, you deserve the hell out of this award.

World Water Day was March 22

Water conservation in Arizona is sadly not as pushed as it should be.

March 22 is World Water Day, created by the United Nations General Assembly and first commemorated in 1993 to raise awareness and encourage action around water issues.
Many of us take access to clean water for granted. It is readily available in our sinks and showers and even in plastic bottles. But, for a vast and growing number of people, access to safe water is a major health issue:
As with many environmental issues, blame is too often placed on population growth. This masks the realities that actually cause the problem. According to National Geographic:
The average U.S. lifestyle takes 1,800 gallons (6,814 liters) of water a day to support -- twice the global average.
Meanwhile, major polluters who, big surprise, are corporations rather than individuals, are successfully evading regulation.
And yes, this is a feminist issue. Women hold much of the responsibility for obtaining clean water and are often most impacted by water scarcity. And women are taking action.
While this sort of environmental issue is often thought of as occurring in the global south, the impact of water scarcity is spreading. It's already a major problem in the U.S. Southwest. This map, which is a few years old, shows the spread of scarcity caused by both physical and economic factors (click for larger version):
map of physical and economic water scarcity.

Huffington Post has a list of a number of ways to take action on this vital issue.

The CBS Super Anti-Choice Bowl

Have you all been hearing about this?
That powerful television network CBS is hosting the Super Bowl this year.

We all know that it's fun to watch the multi-million dollar ads during the super bowl show. And CBS's long held policy is that they won't air ads that take sides on controversial issues like gun control, gay marriage etc. In fact, in the past, CBS has turned down advocacy ads it deemed controversial, including ads from MoveOn.org and the progressive United Church of Christ.

HOWEVER.
Apparently attacks on women's rights is not a controversial issue and the network has accepted several million dollars (CBS charges 2.5-2.8 million for a 30second spot) from Focus on the Family (aptly named because women have never focused on their families) to air an anti-choice ad during this years Super Bowl.

CBS has cleared the way to subject nearly 100 million people to Focus on the Family’s extreme agenda by agreeing to air its new anti-choice ad during the Super Bowl. This ad reportedly promotes the decision of one woman to go against her doctor's advice to terminate an at-risk pregnancy, as the right decision that all women should make.

Focus on the Family has an unmistakable anti-choice, anti-birth-control, anti-sex-education, and anti-gay rights agenda. If that wasn’t bad enough, its views on women are just plain insulting and dangerous. For example, its web site urges women facing an unintended pregnancy to seek "wise advice” (presumably from them) because “the hormones and extreme emotions of pregnancy make reasonable decisions more difficult.”
Apparently you have the right to choose but only if it agrees with their agenda.

Hey you crazy dumb bitches, you're all nutso cuz you're preggers right? You can't make your own decisions! Don't eat that! You should be locked away in your house during your pregnancy! Let an extremist religious organization make the decisions for you!! We kill doctors! :D

Orphans not abortions!! amiright?!?

Super Bowl ads are already filled with a bunch of sexist commercials that completely ignore 50% of their customers/sports fans, reducing women to naggy girlfriends or T&A Beer holders, and now we have to watch an ad that tells us we're dumb and shouldn't be able to decide what we want for ourselves?

Do we really need anti-choice propaganda (or any politics) pushed in our faces during a football game? What happened to just watching a bunch of men run around on a big field in tights and jump on each other?

Here's where you can tell CBS to eat it:
Naral Petition to urge CBS to not run the ad or except money from hate groups

The Women's Media Center's Not Under The Bus Petition

NOW has an email form you can send to CBS

FYI:
Women are vastly under-represented in high-level decision making roles at the television networks (and pretty much all media outlets). Despite this disadvantage, NBC managed to make the right decision last year, refusing to run an anti-choice ad during the Super Bowl. Anti-choice forces are on the offensive. They don't want to help women make informed decisions -- they want to, in the words of Focus on the Family, make abortion "both illegal and unthinkable." We must stand up to their campaign to deny women their fundamental rights.

For re-tweeting:
Tweet: RT @womensmediacntr Tell @CBS and @NFL to scrap Focus on the Family's anti-choice #superbowl ad! #underthebus http://bit.ly/7Zs8jq

Please spread the word!

Politicians I would Bang

This is a little bittersweet since ole boner jam Scott Brown has actually won Kennedy's Senate seat since I first wrote this post but whatevs. Republican...well, now Senator I guess....Scott Brown is one politician I would have banged back when he posed in this Cosmo nude spread.

Hells to the yeah! That's one Republican caucus I'd like to get my hands on.

Not to get deep after showing such fap material, but if Scott Brown was a woman running for a US Senate seat and this material surfaced, do ya think she'd have anywhere near as good a chance of winning as this dude does/did? I think not.

What the what?!

Apparently for some people crazy Sarah Palin just isn't crazy enough. According to Mother Jones, "For the Denver-based American Right to Life, when it comes to abortion, Palin is as impure as any godless feminist." Palin and feminist in the same sentence, for shame!

The ARTL contests that Palin has bedded down with the heathen feminists as exampled by her description of "the morning after pill as contraception rather than an abortifacient," and by "Palin’s statement to the Anchorage Daily News that she opposes the "use of public funds for elective abortions." This means, according to ARTL, that Palin supports taxpayer funding for non-elective abortions." "

So wait...they're saying we should call Palin anti-choice because of that stuff instead of her stats on reproductive rights? These stats are hard to overlook: Palin's "hometown required women to pay for their own rape examinations while she was mayor, a practice her police chief fought to keep as late as 2000" or "Alaska has the worst record of any state in rape. The rape rate in Alaska is 2.5 times the national average." Kinda makes you wonder what Palin's doing for women if she's not protecting them from violence. Oh yeah, she's probably fighting for the rights of their possible unborn fetuses instead. Unless the you might die during child birth. Then abortion is okay. But not if you're raped. Then the kid is still tops. So you better hope you have a chance of dying if you want to toss that bun.

ARL also doesn't like Palin for teaming up with that ole' knight of women's health, John McCain, "whom the National Right to Life Committee dubbed a "significant threat to future advances by the pro-life movement" back in 2000. (It endorsed him in 2008.)" But McCain went and got crazy enough to satisfy the National Right to Life! Is he still not enough of a cowboy for ARL's high standards? Damn, thems some harsh parents.

Beware the ARTL though, in their fanatical self-grandising they believe they have some clout. Did you know it was not Mormonism nor tying the family dog to the top of the car on vacation (see Romeny's Cruel Canine Vacation),that did Mitt Romney in last year, as well all thought? No no, it was actually the ARTL making some crazy commercials that aired in South Carolina and Iowa outing Romney as a fake anti-choicer. Of course, the ARTL spokesman points out that while they "can't say don't vote for Mitt Romney, but you can say Romney is the son of the devil and if you vote for him you'll go to hell." Nothin' like scarin' some hicks into believing you! (heart you iowa)

What's more frightening than how radical these people have to be to consider Sarah Palin pro-choice, is that people like that actually exist. I have to admit though, I'm sort of glad there are some people from the dark side protesting crazy pants Palin. Maybe if both sides hate her she'll go rouge back in Alaska and fade from the national consciousness.

Hung

So I’ve been watching Hung on HBO.

The new series stars Thomas Jane (uh yeah from the Punisher) as Ray Drecker, a down and out former high school sports star turned loser high school basketball coach who gets into prostitution to support his family.

This show has all the trappings of an interesting series: the premise (a hetero male prostitute?? What!?), an array of supporting characters (pimp, family, ex-wife, neighbors, etc.), and the freedom of cable to show lots of nudity and sex.

Before seeing the show I imagined it was going to be about a "badass" dude who fucks a continuous litany of beautiful, rich models for lots of pay (basically a platform for HBO to show a ton of boobs*) But thankfully, the show seems to mostly steer clear of that empty trap.

I like the relationship between Drecker and his pimp, Tanya (played by the always brilliant Jane Adams). Messing around with the seemingly inherent gender roles of pimp and prostitute really made me stop and think about mainstream depictions of gender within the sex industry.

Hung is an interesting tongue-in-cheek reflection of our current society. The series is set in Detroit, the symbolic city of the modern depression and the characters are people doing illegal and unorthodox things to survive in a crumbling world.

The show does fail in some places, however. Drecker works with some clients with bizarre fantasies not necessarily related to sexuality. Some of these fantasies seem trite and made up and I would rather explore more realistic images of female sexuality than the stereotypical portrayal of the relationship-crazed woman.

This is a show about the sex industry from the perspective of the female consumer! There is a lot of unexplored territory here and yet at times the writing feels like it's falling back on age old, worn out cliches of female desire.

If it can clean itself up a bit and get down to business, Hung does have the potential to be an enthralling satirical narrative, much akin to Showtime's beloved Weeds or the fantastic True Blood. It seems it's too soon yet to tell just how big Hung could get.

Breakin' The Law

Are women more effective lawmakers than men?

That’s the preliminary conclusion of a study conducted by researchers at Stanford University and the University of Chicago, who say that on average, women in Congress introduce more bills, attract more co-sponsors and bring home more money for their districts than their male counterparts do.

The study, which examined the performance of House members between 1984 and 2004, found that women delivered roughly 9 percent more discretionary spending for their districts than men.

For instance, during Rep. Judy Biggert’s first two-year term, Illinois’s 13th District received $382 million in federal funds, $70 million more than it received during the final term of her predecessor, Rep. Harris Fawell.

Rep. Zoe Lofgren delivered around $859 million to her district, compared with $541 million brought in by her predecessor, Rep. Don Edwards, during his final term, the researchers said.

And during then-Rep. Connie Morella’s first term, Maryland’s 8th District received $780 million, $183 million more than predecessor Rep. Michael Barnes brought in during his final term, they said.

While there are obviously variables beyond gender — seniority, party affiliation, majority/minority status and the differing priorities of a freshman and a veteran lawmaker — the researchers say they’ve accounted for those in making their male-to-female comparisons.

“You could easily make the argument that a politician who is on his way out, or someone who is sitting on a really powerful committee, is in a different position than someone just coming into office,” said Stanford researcher Sarah Anzia. “Not every example will cover every alternative explanation, but we control for all of those factors in the study.”

The researchers also found that women introduced more legislation than men who served in their same districts, often hitting the ground running in their first terms.

“We find that, on average, women sponsor about three bills more per Congress per term than their male counterparts,” said Anzia. “They co-sponsor more bills than other members, and they also obtain more co-sponsors for their own bills.”

Since 1789, women have constituted just 2 percent of the total congressional population. The ratio of female to male representatives has increased in recent years, but the pace is still fairly glacial: Nearly 17 percent of House members are women today, compared with about 3 percent in 1979.

Researchers say the small number of female members may have something to do with their effectiveness. Women who run and win are likely the most politically ambitious and talented of their pool, having potentially overcome hurdles including voter bias and self-doubt about their ability to win. Female candidates also tend to attract more challengers. Politically eligible women tend to doubt their ability to get elected and raise money more than men do, multiple studies have indicated. Large majorities of both men and women in candidate feeder pools, such as law offices and political organizations, believe there is a bias against women in elections, according to Lawless and Fox studies in 2005 and 2004.

Once women get to Capitol Hill, those hurdles may drive them to perform better, on average, than male counterparts who have faced a less contentious road.

“Research shows that even though women have similar success rates in primaries and elections as men, they are likely to face more challengers,” said Hartwick College political science department chairwoman Laurel Elder. “The results might be the same, but they might have to work harder to get those same results.”

I probably could have guessed this without doing all that research but it's good to have some facts to back up your shit right?

Right on ladies of the law! Keep it going!

Is Sex Interesting?

I just finished reading this essay by Wallace Shawn published in the August 2009 issue of Harper's Magazine titled "Is Sex Interesting?"

The 64-year old Shawn makes several good points about the need for talking, writing, and thinking about sex. This paragraph, in particular, specifically stuck out to me as a great example of the importance of sexuality and its discussion in society:

When the sexuality of the terrifying people we call "our leaders" is for some reason revealed, they lose some of their power - sometimes all of it - because we're reminded (and strangely, we need reminding) that they are merely creatures like the ordinary worm or beetle that creeps along at the edge of the pond. Sex really is a nation of its own. Those whose allegiance is given to sex at a certain moment withdraw their loyalty temporarily from other powers. It's a symbol of the possibility that we might all defect for one reason or another from the obedient columns in which we march.

Sex is anarchism!

Sadly you cannot read the full essay on the Harper's Magazine website without being a subscription holder but I did find a reprint of Shawn's piece online at the Guardian.

So what's the verdict to Shawn's title question, Is Sex Interesting?

Yes, yes it is.

Reproductive Radness

While Arizona is probably going to pass the horrific HB2564 bill and further reduce our options for safe, affordable and accurate reproductive healthcare access in this state, it seems as though the federal government is finally moving in the right direction!

Today the U.S. Senate moved on permanently removing the Global Gag Order (which as we all know is a big ole' fuck you to the rest of the world). News Link Here
This is good news. I hope they permanently ban this rule which is totally lame and uber-unethical.

And the House Appropriations Committee (which oversees and approves all fiscal spending and budgets by the federal government - a very powerful and influential committee) just rejected an amendment to the federal appropriations bill for the Fiscal Year 2010 that would have enabled the continuance of a ban on using local funds to help low-income women in Washington, DC access abortion services. This is a good thing. The ban was a hurtful example of punishing U.S. citizens in the name of partisan politics.

And though Governor "Doucheface" Brewer just requested federal funding for AZ's abstinence only programs (i know, i know, it doesn't make sense, why take away reproductive healthcare AND sex education? It's like a catch-22), this morning, the House Appropriations Committee's subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services and Education (Labor HHS) eliminated traditional sources of funding for abstinence-only programs by passing the appropriations bill for the Fiscal Year 2010. News Link Here

In addition to pulling the plug on funding for failed abstinence-only sex education programs, the bill eliminates a ban on syringe exchange programs, which have been proven to be a highly effective strategy for preventing HIV.
The bill will now face a vote in the House Appropriations Committee and in the full House of Representatives. So we'll see how it goes but at least they are fucking talking about this shit. You can contact your elected representative at the house's website to urge them approve the bill.

here's a link to the full bill (H.R. 1105)

The Iranian Presidential Election fallout

The Guardian has some great coverage of what's going on in Iran right now

it's pretty crazy and pretty apparant (from what i've read) that the elections were not legitimately conducted.

Feministing blogger Roja
is calling what's going on in Iran right now a "nightmare":

People who have been disenfranchised are protesting in Tehran and other cities. You can see some photos on flickr.

Text messaging services were cut off on the day of election and Ahmadinejad was declared as the victor only a few hours after the election was over. Election statistics were being announce in a very fishy manner with no detail about which cities and provinces were being counted (completely different from how things were done in all other elections in Iran). Campaign headquarters of other candidates were raided and military was present across Tehran.

...Today Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and most websites of other candidates have been blocked, cellphone connections were shut down in Tehran, political figures have been arrested and people have been beaten and bloodied in the streets. Meanwhile foreign reporters have been asked to leave.

shady...

there are some amazing photos of the protests out there though, the flickr link above really shows the aftermath, these are from the Guardian:

I went out on a date with a guy that voted for McCain!!!!!!

MCCAIN.

MCCAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He's so cute though (the date, not McCain).....

I am at a crossroads. Can i convert him from the dark side?
I want to make out with him and check out his republican caucus.

I texted him this morning:"I had fun last night and, even though you voted for McCain, I would like to go out again sometime"

He texted back:"I had a good time last night too! We should definitely go out again and try not to hold that McCain thing against me "

I was going to text back:"Maybe you can hold something against me? "

but it's too early in the game for such talk.... so instead i texted:"Well since good triumphed over evil, I won't hold it against you. But FYI McCain has a horrible voting record on funding for veterans"

the date is an ex-military guy - so hot in a uniform.......

Maybe I can:

Check out his stimulus package
G.O.P. all over him
Search for W.M.D.s (and if we’re a code red on the Terrorist Threat Level Index then it will be time to invade and conquer)
Get a feel for his Republican Caucus
I'll give him the ole' reach across the aisle
Check out his pork barrel initiative

or he can:
Dick my Cheney
Vote for my Bush
Watch his economics trickle down my face
Filibuster all over me

HOWEVER, if he gets me preggers - i'm having an abortion!!!!!
